If your pet spends a lot of time in the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.dupontvet.com\/blog\/camping-with-a-pet\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">great outdoors<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, you probably know that ticks are a problem to be prepared for. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But have you ever had to remove a tick<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There are a lot of common misconceptions about this process, so we thought we\u2019d spend some time going over the basics, as well as things not to do. <\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Tick Dangers<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Most of us know that tick bites are painful and uncomfortable. They\u2019re also dangerous. Tick bites can transmit debilitating diseases to humans and pets, such as:<\/span><!--more--><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Lyme disease<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ehrlichiosis<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Anaplasmosis<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Babesiosis<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Luckily, you can prevent ticks in your home and on your pets (and yourself) with year round use of a tick preventive, as well as clearing brush and debris (where ticks live and breed) from your yard. It\u2019s also important to examine your pets for ticks on a regular basis and after they\u2019ve been outside, and to learn how to remove a tick should you find one on your pet. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ticks only transmit disease 24-48 hours after a bite, so learning how to remove a tick can actually prevent disease. You should also talk to us about <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.dupontvet.com\/services\/laboratory-and-radiology.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">tick borne disease blood testing<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> if your pet\u2019s lifestyle puts him at risk. These diseases often mask as other problems, and signs can be intermittent and difficult to diagnose. By catching tick borne diseases early, we can treat your pet more effectively and for less cost.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">How To Remove a Tick<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Here\u2019s a step by step guide to removing a tick. <\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Use fine tipped tweezers or a tick removal tool<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Spread your dogs fur<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Gently grasp the tick\u2019s body as close to the skin as possible<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Very gently pull straight upward in a slow, steady motion<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Don\u2019t twist the tick as you might break the body from the head, leaving the head imbedded in your dog<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It\u2019s a good idea to keep the tick in a covered \u00a0container so that if you notice any signs of disease in your dog, you can have the tick tested. Disinfect all tools used to remove the tick, as well as your dog\u2019s skin. Wash your hands well after tick removal (disposable latex gloves are handy).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Observe your dog well for signs of tick borne diseases, and schedule an appointment if you see any of the common signs:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Body and\/or joint pain<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Fever<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Irritability<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Restlessness<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Fatigue<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Loss of appetite<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">4 Common Myths of Tick Removal<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There are some common myths surrounding tick removal. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Petroleum jelly, nail polish \u2013<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> a common myth is that painting a tick with these products will cause it to back out of the pet. Remember that your goal is to remove the tick as soon as possible, so don\u2019t wait for it to detach<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Freezing the tick off \u2013<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> this method can be risky to your pet\u2019s skin, and is not as effective as removing the tick. What\u2019s more, it simply doesn\u2019t work: usually the head of the tick stays imbedded in the pet. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Burning the tick off \u2013<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> lighting a match and holding it to your pet\u2019s coat and skin is the very definition of playing with fire. Your pet could easily get singed or worse, catch on fire.
