{"id":597,"date":"2015-04-21T02:21:31","date_gmt":"2015-04-21T02:21:31","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.dupontcares4pets.com\/?p=597"},"modified":"2015-04-21T02:21:31","modified_gmt":"2015-04-21T02:21:31","slug":"what-is-a-cat-spay","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.dupontvet.com\/blog\/what-is-a-cat-spay\/","title":{"rendered":"What is a Cat Spay?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"color: #8d2424; font-size: x-large;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.dupontvet.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/04\/Cat-Spay-1.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-598\" src=\"http:\/\/www.dupontcares4pets.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/04\/Cat-Spay-200x300.jpg\" alt=\"Cat-Spay\" width=\"200\" height=\"300\" \/><\/a>What is a Cat Spay?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: large;\">A cat spay is technically an ovariohysterectomy of a female cat. \u00a0The uterus and ovaries are surgically removed resulting in the inability of a cat to reproduce. \u00a0A spay, while not\u00a0an especially long, difficult, surgical procedure, is still a major abdominal surgery.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #8d2424; font-size: x-large;\">What are the steps involved in a cat spay?<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"color: #2a2a2a; font-size: medium;\">Your cat should be given a thorough physical exam by a licensed veterinarian.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #2a2a2a; font-size: medium;\">Pre-anesthetic blood work should be performed to be sure your cat is an ideal surgical candidate.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #2a2a2a; font-size: medium;\">Anesthesia is administered &#8211; first by an injectable &#8220;induction&#8221; agent, then maintained by a modern gas anesthetic such as Isoflurane or Sevoflurane.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #2a2a2a; font-size: medium;\">An antiseptic surgical scrub is performed after shaving your cat&#8217;s abdomen.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #2a2a2a; font-size: medium;\">A sterile surgical pack is opened while the surgeon performs a sterile scrub\/prep procedure followed by gowning and gloving.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #2a2a2a; font-size: medium;\">Your pet is placed on the surgical table and surgical lights are aimed at the sterile field. \u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #2a2a2a; font-size: medium;\">An anesthetic monitor should be used to monitor heart rate, oxygen saturation of the blood and other parameters.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #2a2a2a; font-size: medium;\">Ideally fluids are administered to your cat.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #2a2a2a; font-size: medium;\">The abdomen is opened, the uterus and ovaries are exposed, the arteries to these structures are tied off with suture and the organs are removed.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #2a2a2a; font-size: medium;\">The abdominal muscles are closed with sterile suture followed by closure of the subcutaneous tissue and the skin.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #2a2a2a; font-size: medium;\">Your cat will then be &#8220;recovered&#8221; from anesthesia by removing her from gas anesthesia, monitoring vital signs and keeping her warm with blankets or warming pads.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><span style=\"color: #2a2a2a;\">Pain medications should be administered to reduce your pet&#8217;s discomfort.<\/span><\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>What is a Cat Spay?
